A Closer Look to Dysmorphia, a Mental Health Issue Towards Your Body

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Body dysmorphic disorder or well known as Dysmorphia is a mental health issue where you couldn’t stop thinking about the defect on your body. This will likely make you lose your self esteem and trying to seek some help to fix it.

Dysmorphia occurs when you feel insecure about your look. Some people will seek some help trhough procedures. Some through cosmetics. In severe cases, this issue could lead to suicidal matters. 

According to Mayo Clinic, this issue occurs from when you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance. A flaw that appears minor or can't be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations.

People with dysmorphia intensely focus on their appearance and body image. They keep checking on the mirror whether has they have a perfect look when they are in social occasion, or spending their time in salon to find out what so they thought as a perfect look fro them even they have looked so gorgeous. 

With this issue walking behind the shadow, some people with body dismorphic disorder will develop some symptoms like feeling insecure with a small flaw that didn’t notice by others, nothing is perfect and keep feeling ugly, or believe in other will mock his/her appearance while they don’t. 

These people will always compares themselves with others, and ask some assurance about their look, seeking cosmetic procedures with litltle satisfaction and keep fixing and fixing till they look different. They will also avoid social situtions for this issue.

To deal with Dysmorphia you could seek a help from a professional or visiting a psychiatrist. It may include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. A severe symptoms will lead to depression and suicidal thought. If you think you have this symptoms you better call your doctor or find a professional help right away. (*)
