Sega Waluya, a Festive Food That You will only Found Once in a Year

TIMESINDONESIA, INDRAMAYU – People usually have their own way to celebrate a day that they think is important for their life. As well what the local community of Kepandean, Indramayu, West Java did, they celebrate the end of Safar (a month in lunar calendar) with a festive food called as sega waluya.

Sega or rice and waluya which means safe were made to as a hope that all the people who consume it will be safe and away from the danger at least for the rest of the year. Yes, this festive food was only made once in a year.

This rice was cooked with shredded coconut and several other ingredients to make the taste more savory. Several side dishes such as sweet and spicy tempeh, some veggies with shredded coconut, and salted fish will accompany this dish.

Each house at Kepandean, Indramayu will take turn to make this dish at the end of safar and share it with their relatives and neighbor. “It’s time to share, and we hope nothing in return but their gracious pray toward our safety,” Nur Faiqoh, a local community said on Sunday (25/10/2020).

Sega waluya, a humble festive food with magnificent taste has become a common food served by everyone in Indramayu either the have or the poor. It’s all about being friendly to one another and being care to one another safety. (*)
