What Makes UGM Grant This Guy with a Scholarship? Check Out the Story

TIMESINDONESIA, YOGYAKARTA – Rio Hermawan, a 17 year old guy of Abepura Papua granted with a scholarship by UGM (Gajahmada University) Yogyakarta for his achievements. His interest on geology has make him worth to be the grantee.

This guy has won a gold medal on the local scientific competition. He always be in top 10 rank in his class during his school time. This guy was tremendously happy after knowing that he could get the scholarship.

"It's one of prestigious campus in the country, that makes me even very happy," Rio said.

Rio is an extraordinary guy who was born in a poor family. His father is a push cart ice cream seller. He provides his family only from his ice cream cart. He wanders around from one village to another to offer his ice cream to the local community.

His father could get IDR 130-150 K in a day if he was lucky enough and the weather supports him without pouring any rain. His father was so pleased to see one of his son could have a chance to study in one of the prestigious campus in Indonesia.

"I pushed the ice cream cart daily on ten to four on the afternoon daily. Unless, it' raining. I will just stay at home (if it's raining)," Encep, Rio's dad said in statement on Tuesday (11/8/2020).

Rio used to help his mom making the ice cream before its distributed by his dad with his push-cart. With his scholarship, he promised himself to be a good students in UGM and be more successful so he won't let his parent down. (*)
