TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTAKetupat indonesian rice cake is a type of dumpling made from rice packed inside a diamond-shaped container of woven palm leaf pouch. After its cut open, the inner rice cake is cut in pieces, and served as staple food, as the substitute of plain steamed rice.

Indonesian people commonly will celebrate the 7th day of Lebaran or Eid al-Fitr with cooking some ketupat and deliver it to their neighbour or have some feast together at the nearest mosque. This tradition namely known as kupatan which derived from the word kupat or ketupat.

In the old time, people will make their own ketupat pouch. But nowadays, people tend to buy from the ketupat pouch maker. Lots of people sell this kind of container especially during the 7th day of Eid al-Fitr.

The Javanese local wisdom said that Ketupat has several meaning rhyme with its name such as Ngaku Lepat. Ngaku lepat in local language means knowing that you are guilty. This is shown by those tradition of visiting the relatives and friends while saying sorry to one another for all of the mistake they each made before.

Another said Ketupat (rice cake) means Laku Papat. Laku Papat in local language literally means four ways i.e lebaran (break fasting party), luberan (lots of foods), leburan ( forgive each other mistake), and laburan (back as a saint after forgiving each other). (*)
