Gula Kacang, a Typical of Indonesian Toffee

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTAGula Kacang or Indonesian toffee is sometimes consumed as snack by the Indonesian community. This is also one of festive snack which usually served during celebration.

This snack is made of caramelized palm sugar or local brown sugar poured over roasted peanuts. Some people will add it with ginger and sesame seeds as a flavour.

As it's made of palm sugar gula kacang has a sweet and savory taste of palm sugar and roasted peanuts. This snack is perfect to be served on certain occasion like family gathering, or may be another social gathering.

Some people would say that this snack was firstly made in Sunda, West Java. Some people say this snack is originally came from Solo or Klaten, Central Java. Yet, this snack has been known worldwide as toffee.

"In Solo it's called as ampyang. I have already had this snack since I was a kids, so I'm not really sure where its came from," Zaenab Hapsari, a local community of Malang said.

Still according to Zaenab, she always serves this snack on her table during celebration such as this Eid Al-Fithr. She will make it by herself if she has enough time or just bought it from the store.  

"You only need to caramelized the sugar and add minced ginger into it, and pour it over roasted peanuts on a non sticky surface such as those baking paper. Wait till its harden, and your Gula Kacang (Indonesian toffee) is ready to serve," Zaenab added. (*)
