Sri Barjini, one of the locals in Jlamprangan Lor Jambidan Banguntapan, has tried to initiate this planting style by herself.
She got the information about Kokedama from the internet. This woman, who is also the organizer of Bank Sampah Pelangi, also makes use of the waste of knitted cap, knitted bag, or gunny sack as the planting pot substitute.
“This is a zero waste concept as we reduce the use of plastic pot,” said Sri Barjini.
The first step is you have to choose the plant. You can choose palm or orchid. Then, we provide the planting medium consisted of 75% moss and 25% soil.
The planting medium is shaped up into a ball and wrapped with the threads from the wasted knitted hat, knitted bag, or gunny sack. You can display it on the table or suspend them in the air.
Kokedama requires an easy treatment as it does not need regular watering. It only should be soaked in water once every three days. It is not watered regularly, it will grow relatively slowly, just like bonsai plants. If the plant grow bigger, you only need to add the planting medium and replace the wrapping.
“Kokedama does not require a lot of water thus it saves water a lot,” said Sri, the Head of Bank Sampah Pelangi.
Kokedama may also bring some profits. Most people want to buy them and use them as an ornamental plant. The price varies from IDR 30,000 to IDR 300,000. Sri Barjini said that the purchase of Kokedama is always high in demand. (*)
