How Taliabu Community in North Maluku Hold the Circumcision Ceremony
TIMESINDONESIA, PULAU TALIABU – Taliabu community in North Maluku has dozens of story to tell. They have distinctive and unique way of holding their daily activities such as circumcision ceremony.
The Kadai tribe of Taliabu has an exotic way to hold the ceremony. Only those 18 years old guy or more who could join the ceremony. The ceremony will be participated by several people at a time.
This tradition has been conducted before any religion comes to this area. "We have hold this tradition long ago from our anchestor, even before we know about religion," Yance Nyako, the son of the chief of the village said.
Still according to him, though the local community mostly are Christian, the one that do the incision will be a moslem. This show how strong the bound between one another in this area.
After being incised, the person should do a fasting for several days. The family will do a big party to celebrate it. That's why the circumcision ceremony will cost lots of money for them.
"Its kind of extreme to ask the person to do a fasting after the circumcision. It's to show those guy that life is tough. However, it's their tradition and we must respect it," Safrudin Abdulrahman SOS. MA a researcher of the circumcision in Taliabu, North Maluku said. (*)
