TIMESINDONESIA, SURABAYA – The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is working together with PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) in the conversion of electric cars.

The Purchasing Director, Product Business Management, Engineering Management, Quality Assurance, Technical Government Affairs, and Internal Audit PT TMMIN, Yui Hastoro Sapardyanto stated that in this collaboration, a conventional car from Toyota has been given to ITS, with the expectation of the conversion into an electric car.

Yui explained that this innovative car project is targeted to be completed in October, and it must at least be able to run at 120 kilometers per hour using a 30-kilowatt motor.

“This project is following the government policies that encourage the use of electric cars,” as stated by Yui on Friday (21/2/2020).

Besides reduces air pollution especially in the urban area, the conversion into the electric car also creates a new business model in the future. This is due to the owners of conventional car owners will be able to convert their cars instead of buying a new electric car.

“Bring your conventional cars to our official repair shop and we will convert it for you”.

The higher number of usage of cars in Indonesia is also one of the big opportunities for the electric car conversion project in the future. Yui stated that this kind of conversion is already applied in several other countries.

Meanwhile, the Rector of ITS Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Ashari MEng believes that ITS is capable of carrying out this project. He mentioned that ITS also has many innovations and research related to electric vehicles. One of those vehicles is the fast electric bike which already successfully commercialized.

Ashari explained that the conversion process doesn’t need much time, but the testing process does. The test includes the 10,000 kilometers run which consumes much time and energy.

The professor of Electronic Engineering of ITS also expected that ITS will finish the electric car conversion challenge from Toyota on time and with optimal quality. “We hope that this project can be applied widely soon,” Ashari said optimistically.(*)
