Things We could Learn from the Netherlands Field of Honour Cemetery

TIMESINDONESIA, SURABAYA – The Director of Dutch War Graves Foundation, Mr. Robert C.J.M van de Ridjt, invited all Indonesian to visit the Netherlands Field of Honour Cemetery around Indonesia.

According to him, there are around 7 Field of Honour Cemeteries in Java. Those accomodate around 25.000 tomb of several Dutch soldier who died in the World War II.

These 7 cemeteries could be founded in Kembang Kuning Surabaya, Menteng Pulo Jakarta, Ancol, Pandu Bandung, Leuwigajah, Kalibanteng and Candi Semarang.

The cemeteries are managed and run under Oorlogsgraven-stichting, a Dutch War Graves Foundation which is based in Jakarta.

The foundation also has several record on 180.000 casualties which was died at the beginning of World War II May 9th 1940. "We would love to keep their memories within," Robert said on Tuesday (19/11/2019).

Still according to him, the cemetery is open daily for public from 07.00 AM to 17.00 PM local western time. Everyone is allowed to visit the cemetery whether in group or private.

All you need is just ring the bell and the guard in charge at the time will open the gate for you. "You dont need to make an appointment, and it's for free, just ring the bell," he added.

The Director of Dutch War Graves Foundation also said the Netherlands Field of Honour Cemetery teach us that everything must not be solved with war. At the end of the day, he also said diplomacy could be a better way to solve some problem. (*)
