TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTAAppetite may increase or decrease. There are several causes of increased or decreased appetite. For some people, the increase in appetite may be a good sign. However, this might be the sign of abnormal condition.

1. Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate your body's metabolism, causing unintentional weight loss and a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Besides, the symptom may be an increase in appetite.

2. Graves’ Disease

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism. With this disease, your immune system attacks the thyroid and causes it to make more thyroid hormone than your body needs. 

Graves’ disease has the same symptoms as hyperthyroid, and it also causes an increase in appetite.

3. Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a condition caused by a very low level of blood sugar (glucose), your body's main energy source. Hypoglycemia is often related to the treatment of diabetes.

The symptoms of hypoglycemia are increase in appetite, nausea, shakiness, starving, cold sweating, and irregular heartbeat.

4. Diabetes

Diabetes is a common disease in society, which can cause increase in appetite. Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high.

Generally, diabetes is divided into two types, namely diabetes type 1 and type 2. Both of them can cause increase in appetite.

5. Premenstrual syndrome

Increased appetite may be experienced by a woman who has premenstrual syndrome. Usually, they crave food with high carbs, sweets, or fatty food.

This is caused by the change in estrogen and progesterone inside the body before menstruation, which causes an increase in appetite.

6. Depression

Depression causes feelings of sadness or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. There are several types of depression.

The first one is atypical depression, which refers to a depressive state in which individuals experience improved mood when encountering pleasurable events.

Other symptoms of atypical disease are increased appetite, feeling rejected, too much sleep, and heaviness in one’s limbs. (*)
