TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Air pollution is found to be the one of the causes of hair damage. A recent study finds that air pollution causes hair loss and baldness

A research done by a South Korean cosmetic company tested the effect of debris and fuel particles on human scalp cells. This is the first study on the relation between air pollution and hair loss.

The result shows that the exposure to common pollutants reduced the levels of four proteins that are responsible for hair growth and hair retention, namely beta-catenin, cyclin D1, cyclin E, CDK2. Beta-catenin is responsible for hair growth and hair follicle growth.

“When the human scalp cells are exposed to the pollutants, the proteins responsible for hair growth and hair retention will decrease significantly,” said the researcher, Hyuk Chul Kwok.

The more exposure to the air pollutants, the bigger the effect of hair loss and baldness. The researcher concluded that people living in big cities are more likely to suffer from premature baldness.

However, the researchers mentioned that a further research outside the laboratory is required to confirm the effect of air pollution on scalp.

Not only baldness, polluted air can also increase the risk of cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. It has been estimated that there are 4.2 million cases of premature birth caused by the polluted air. Besides, polluted air is also linked to depression and infertility.

To prevent hair loss, baldness, and other health problems caused by polluted air, you should wear mask when you are outdoor to lower the effect of polluted air. (*)
