Kupatan Day, 1000 of Ketupat Presented on the Grebeg Syawal Banyuwangi

TIMESINDONESIA, BANYUWANGI – The local citizen of Temuguruh, Sempu, Banyuwangi, held their annual ceremony of Kupatan Day called as Grebeg Syawal 1000 Ketupat on Tuesday (11/6/2019). This ceremony was held by marching the mountain tall-like ketupat for 2 km.

As we know that ketupat is a type of dumpling made from rice packed inside a diamond-shaped container of woven palm leaf pouch. On this occasion the ketupat were stocked in a pile of mountain like forming a tall cone shape.

This mountain tall-like ketupat was carried by dozens of people all together on their shoulder. Lots of dishes to accompany the ketupat had been prepared in the finish line. All the citizens has been waiting patiently to eat the ketupat together.

The 1000 ketupat were a charity from all the community. Around 25 neighbourhood participated in the making of the ketupat to be piled in. This was the 3rd occasion or grebeg syawal they held on their village.

"Grebeg Syawal 1000 Ketupat is one of our way to strengthen the bound between the villagers of Temuguruh Banyuwangi. This is also one of our way the conserve the old tradition of Kupatan Day. We hope that this kind of ceremony will be last for at least the next 100 years," Asmuni the chief of the village said. (*)
