Masjid Kagungan Dalem Rotowijayan Yogyakarta, a 227 Years Old Mosque

TIMESINDONESIA, YOGYAKARTAYogjakarta is a city which is well known with its strong Javanese culture. Masjid Kagungan Dalem Rotowijayan or the Rotowijayan Mosque is one of the many mosque which has become a living proof of how Islam and Javanese culture walk side by side.

The Rotowijayan Mosque or also well known as Masjid Keben is located at the West wing of Kraton Yogyakarta or the Yogjakarta Palace. All the moslem abdi or the employees of the place did their pray there.

Not only the abdi, some of the moslem tourists who visit the palace could also do their prayer there. The mosque itself could accommodate around 200 visitors at a time.

There is an old cemetery of Kyai Driyoijoyo (a moslem cleric and a Nobel abdi) in the mosque which is built at April 2, 1792. This mosque was also became a place for the fighters to built their strategy to fight the invaders at it's time.

"This mosque was used as a base for the fighter when British attacked the Yogjakarta palace," Solikin, a regular visitor said.

With its 227 years of being a living proof from time to time, Masjid Kagungan Dalem Rotowijayan or the Rotowijayan Mosque Yogjakarta has become a witness of Indonesian Independence. (*)
