TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – For the next three years, Facebook Inc. will spend $300 million for local media globally. The aim is to save the media business.

Facebook says this investment of time and money is a significant expansion to help media in the United States and the world to build sustainable business models, as quoted by Reuters.

The first phase of this investment will be used to encourage publishers to trust their news distribution via Facebook.

"We continue to struggle with hoax news, misinformation, and low-quality news on Facebook," said Deputy Director of the Global News Partnership, Campbell Brown.

However, he continued, we also have the opportunity and responsibility to help the local news organizations to grow and develop.

The first round of this funding will help local news reporting, research on how technology corrects information gathering and creating new products, as well as recruiting community journalists.

These funding recipients include Pulitzer Center, Report for America, Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund, Local Media Association and Local Media Consortium, American Journalism Project and Community News Project.

Last December, Facebook announced an investment of 6 million dollars in local media in the United Kingdom. (*)
