TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Many of Indonesian People have diabetes. Based on the Riskesdas (Basic Health Research) study in 2013, around 12 million Indonesians aged over 15 years experience type 2 of diabetes. Meanwhile, according to the International Diabetes Federation in 2015, the number of people with diabetes in Indonesia is estimated at 10 million people with a range age of 20-79 years. So, why are there many Indonesians who have diabetes? What causes diabetes?

Reporting from Hello Sehat, the followings might be the answer to the cause of diabetes in Indonesian people.

1. Eating white rice

White rice is the staple food of Indonesians. But unfortunately, according to the latest research, white rice turns out increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

A finding study states that people who eat white rice more than five times a week have a 17 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who only eat rice once a month.

The study also reported that this risk would increase by 10 percent in people who eat large amounts of white rice every day. This association is found especially in Asian people who consume rice up to 3-4 servings a day.

2. Sugar consumption

The various foods and drinks consumed often contain sugar. Sugar is a type of simple carbohydrate that can quickly raise blood sugar. Be it granulated sugar, rock sugar, syrup sugar, or other types of artificial sugar. Excessive consumption of sugar also risks leading someone to overweight or obesity, which in turn increases the chances of developing type 2 of diabetes.

3. Lazy to move

Indonesians are the laziest to walk. That is the finding of a number of US scientists who study mobile data from hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The results of the study state that the laziest inhabitants of walking in the world are Indonesians who are at the bottom position with a record of only 3.513 steps each day.

If you mostly sit, the use of large muscles in the body will decrease. This can result in fat accumulation, increased blood sugar levels, and also cholesterol. Over time there will be a disorder of blood sugar tolerance, which triggers diabetes. (*)
