President Jokowi Asks for Revitalization on Vocational School

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked for revitalization of vocational education, especially in order to enter the next stage of development in the aspect of Human Resources.

This was confirmed by the president in the limited meeting (Ratas) regarding to the Development of HR for the Acceleration of Economic Growth, at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Wednesday (11/21/2018). According to him, after the acceleration phase of infrastructure development that has been running and it has already started to finish and showing results, it is time to enter the next big stage, namely investment in the Human Resources field.

"We must be able to make 260 million Indonesians as a great power of our country, not only to support the acceleration of economic growth but also to pursue prosperity, to pursue progress together," he said.

The President believes there are two keys to success - the first is the improvement of the education system, especially through the revitalization of vocational education which in line to the needs of the industry and technological developments.

He said that in the past 4 years the government has begun reforming and improving steps within our vocational education system. However, the President acknowledged, if the steps were not fully carried out over all.

"The reshuffle we have done in Vocational High Schools in both the curriculum and competency management, especially for teachers, I have also seen that it has begun. But once again this requires a major overhaul, and we are asking to start next year on the large scale, "said the President.

Then, the second key is to improve the skills of job seekers and also workers through vocational training and certification programs. The President requested a major overhaul next year.

"I see for example in the Ministry of PUPR, a certification program for workers, I also see something that is very good, but indeed the numbers are still small," he said.

According to President Jokowi, this certification program needs to involve the government, the business world, and the world of education, including involving Islamic boarding schools, so that the students are not only expected getting education related to religion but also skills. (*)
