TIMESINDONESIA, MALANG – English Letters Study Program of the Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang held a training of language learning method for the teachers of Madrasah Trsanawiyah (Islamic Junior High School) in Malang on Saturday (13/10/2018).

This event was held as the embodiment of Tri Dharma of the Faculty of Humanities, in which the lecturers did not only teach, but they also had to conduct a research and perform community service.

“This is a form of our community service as the lecturers of English Letters study program. As a lecturer, we should share our knowledge as well as the learning method to our colleagues, especially the teachers of Madrasah Tsanawiyah,” explained Rina Sari, M.Pd, the Head of English Letters Department when she was interviewed between the sessions.

The event held in the hall of Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang brought a theme of “Integrating Islamic Values to the English Language Learning for the Millennials”. To run this event, the department of English Letters also cooperated with MGMP (English Teacher Organizations) in Malang City.

The main participants should be English teachers in Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Malang. “Because we are Islamic University, we should pay attention to and prioritize the schools under the ministry of religion,” said Rina Sari.

The training was divided into some sessions. The first session explained the learning method to build the students’ character. This session was guided by the representative of Regional English Office from the Ambassador of United States, Sean W. Ryan, M.A., and Rachel Wang, M.A. The department of English Letters invited the native speakers directly so that the materials delivered would be more comprehensive.

The next session was the main session, which explained the integration of Islamic values into the language learning method. The presenter was the lecturer of Faculty of Education and Teacher Training at UIN Malang, Mokhammad Yahya, Ph.D. In this session, the teachers were given the knowledge of the strengthening of Islamic values in language learning for the young generation.

“It is expected that this event could give the teachers the English learning method with Islamic approach at their schools. The materials given in the class should teach Islamic values,” added Rina Sari.

The last session was a parallel session, in which the participants were divided into some groups for the deepening on the materials. The participants got the explanations from the lecturers of the English Letters study program of Faculty of Humanities at UIN Malang about the application and the activities that could be implemented in the classroom. This session was closed by peer teaching and the discussion to find the solutions for various teaching problems.

This kind of community service will be held in the next years by UIN Malang. “We will keep monitoring the development of English learning method. We expect that this kind of activity will be continued so that the lecturers will not only teach, but we also share our knowledge to the society,” said Rina Sari. (*)
