TIMESINDONESIA, MALANG – As one of its missions to revive the culture and the romance of Indonesian archipelago, Tugu Hotel Malang once again held Cultural Dining Series this September. This time, the 34th Indonesian Cultural Dining Series presents the tradisional Gambyong Dance.

"Gambyong dance is a classical Javanese dance which comes from Surakarta. It is often presented in performance or to welcoming guests. Usually, the dancers consist of young women only," said Richard Wardana, the representative of Tugu Hotel to TIMES Indonesia on Saturday (15/09/2018) in the evening.

One of interesting fact about this dance is it was named after a famous dancer at that time, Sri Gambyong. Sri was famous for her beautiful voice and her flexibility in dancing, which gained many people’s attraction.

Initially, Sri performed this dance around the streets. The center of the dance is on the movement of the legs, arms, body and head. The conceptual movement from the head and the hands is one of Gambyong's characteristics.

Also, the dominant thing in this dance is that the sight of the dancer has to follow the hand or the finger movement, as well as the harmonious leg movement in rhythm, which make this dance is very enjoyable to see.

The Javanese gamelan orchestras and the sinden (a person who sings accompanying gamelan orchestra) made the dinner felt more sacred.

This elegant performance was held in Tirtagangga Room at Tugu Hotel Malang. The elegant and exotic banquet hall is inspired by the histories from Indian, Arabian, Chinese and Mongolian Silk and Spice Roads.

Ornamented with red roses and chandeliers, this beautiful hall faced the beautiful yard with the sound of trickling water on the small pond which represented the exotic serenity of a palace in India.

The guests in Cultural Dining Series at Tugu Hotel Malang really enjoyed the Gambyong dance performance and the delicious featured dishes served. They even took a selfie with the dancers and the gamelan players.(*)
