TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Institut Teknologi Nasional (ITN) Malang develops an assistance system to ensure the safety of the vehicle driver.

Dr Eng Aryuanto Soetedjo, the lecturer of Electrical Engineering in ITN Malang explains that his research refers to Driver Assistance System (DAS), a system that guide the vehicle driver.

"The principles of this system is to guide the driver so they can drive safely," he said.

While there are many researchers already developed this system, Aryuanto addresses that his study is not something new. But the development of technology brings consequences in the modification so this system is well-suited with times.

He said that common driver guide system is using hi-tech and expensive device, so he develops a system with relatively cheap and easy-to-get device.

This system uses mini computer known as Raspberry Pi with built-in camera, so the cost is relatively low with the operation system included. "Our idea is how this guide system can be applied on the cheap single-board computer," said Aryuanto.

Along with his colleague, I Komang Somawirata, Aryuanto is trying to develop the algorithm as simple as possible so the system can be implemented in that single-board computer.

This research was started last year dan it's planned until 2018 with the funding comes from Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI)'s grant of competence.

In 2016, Aryuanto succeed in developing a system that can detect the driver's fatigue level. It uses dual camera that installed on Raspberry Pi.

"The driver's fatigue is studied many times already, now it uses camera a lot. Beside eyes, it also detect another part of the body. That is the goal of this research," Aryuanto said.

He affirms that his study is in basic state of research, so there are many factor that can be developed to further enhance the result. This year, he plans the system to detect the traffic sign, while in 2018 it's planned to detect roadmark and object in front of the vehicle. (*)
